Sclerotherapy Client Information and Consent
I. Treatment Details and Purpose
- Procedure Name: Sclerotherapy
- Purpose: To improve the cosmetic appearance of superficial leg veins (e.g., spider veins and small varicose veins). Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution (sclerosant) directly into the vein, causing it to scar and collapse, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is eventually reabsorbed by the body.
- Sclerosant Used: Hypertonic Saline
- Expected Results: Improvement in the appearance of treated veins. Multiple treatments (sessions) are typically required to achieve optimal results, as not all veins respond completely in a single session. Treated veins may take 4 to 6 weeks, or even several months, to fully resolve and fade.
II. Preparation: The Day Before and Day of Treatment
- 24 Hours Before: DO NOT apply any lotions, oils, creams, or sunscreen to your legs. The treatment area must be clean and free of residue.
- The Morning Of: DO NOT shave your legs.
- Bring your compression hose
- Clothing: Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that can be easily rolled up or removed for treatment. You may bring a pair of shorts to wear during the procedure if you prefer.
- Medication/Food: Eat a light meal before your appointment. Inform your provider of all medications and supplements you are currently taking.
III. Procedure Overview
- The treatment area will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution.
- A small amount of the sclerosant solution will be injected directly into the targeted vein using a fine needle. You may feel a mild burning or cramping sensation at the injection site.
- A small cotton ball or gauze will be applied to the injection site and secured with tape.
- After all sites are treated, a compression bandage or graduated compression stockings will be immediately applied to the entire treated leg.
IV. Post-Procedure Expectations & Aftercare
- Immediate Appearance: The treated veins will appear dark red or purple and may be temporarily raised or "bumpy." Mild swelling and bruising are common.
- Pain/Tenderness: Some mild tenderness or aching may develop in the treated areas. This is usually mild, lasts up to several days, and can typically be managed with extra-strength Acetaminophen (Tylenol or comparable pain reliever). Avoid aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen) unless directed by your provider.
- Compression Therapy: The compression hose/stockings are a critical part of the healing process. They must be worn continuously during the day for 2 weeks post-procedure.
- Dressing Removal: Remove the cotton balls and tape after 24 hours. Keep the compression hose on.
- Activity: WALK IMMEDIATELY after your procedure for at least 15-20 minutes. This is vital for promoting circulation.
- Activity Restrictions (1 Week): Avoid strenuous activity such as high-impact aerobics, heavy lifting, or running for one week.
- Heat Restriction (24 Hours): Avoid hot baths, saunas, hot tubs, or any extreme heat for 24 hours. Lukewarm showers are permitted.
- Bruising & Pigmentation: Bruising can take several weeks to resolve. Brownish pigmentation (hemosiderin staining) may occur at the treatment sites; this usually fades over several months but, in rare cases, can be permanent.
V. Potential Risks and Side Effects (Please Read Carefully)
While sclerotherapy is generally safe, potential risks include:
- Bruising and Redness: Common, temporary.
- Pigmentation: Brownish discoloration of the skin, usually fades, but may be long-lasting.
- Matting: Development of tiny, faint red vessels near the treated area; may require further treatment.
- Ulceration/Skin Breakdown: Rare, but if the solution escapes the vein, it can cause a small sore that requires immediate attention and may scar.
- Allergic Reaction: Rare, can range from mild to severe (anaphylaxis).
- Blood Clots: Extremely rare, but possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden, severe leg pain, swelling, or shortness of breath.
